He\u2019s an American and, better yet, a Chicagoan. (Although it\u2019s a little unfortunate that Italian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierbattista_Pizzaballa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardinal Pizzaballa<\/a> did not get an opportunity to change&nbsp;<em>his<\/em>&nbsp;name.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unexpected bonus was that selection of the first American Pope was such happy news that it immediately tickled the nation\u2019s funny bone. The nation\u2019s celebration triggered an outpouring of gags and memes. Everybody, Catholic or not, joined in the merriment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"823\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n-823x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1608\" style=\"width:287px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n-823x1024.jpg 823w, http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n-241x300.jpg 241w, http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n-768x955.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.jamcclure.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/492790292_10162551874059910_1081001494787418565_n.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 823px) 100vw, 823px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The most pressing question about Pope Leo XIV was settled within hours. He\u2019s a Sox fan and not a Cubs fan, as confirmed by his brother. Social media exploded with Photoshopped images and hilarious Chicago lore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The new Pope offering a blessing to everyone except residents of Green Bay, Wi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Papal vestments with the logos of the Sox and Bears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Pope with Jake and Elwood Blues on a mission from God.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Pope with actors from the Saturday Night Live Da Bears sketch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A map showing Lake Michigan renamed as Lake Vatican.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Papal decree against putting ketchup on hot dogs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI images showing a Portillos hot dog stand at the Vatican.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deep-dish pizza as body and blood of Christ.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nobody suggested that dead cardinals voted.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oddly enough, our pervasive political conflict was mostly suspended for the Papal celebration. Somebody created an AI image of President Trump in Papal regalia. This triggered the usual Democratic outrage but gave most people a good laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democratic pundits and media cherry-picked the new Pope\u2019s social media postings for anything that may be disparaging to President Trump. Republicans reminded us that Leo XIV may favor immigration but is against abortion. Mostly, people refused to impose their politics on the Papal event, even when Catholic school kids spontaneously chanted \u201cUSA! USA!\u201d in Trumpian fashion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This euphoria probably won\u2019t last and we\u2019ll soon resume fighting among ourselves.
